Trondheim municipality in 2014 established a digital 3D city model for an area of about 36 km² in and around the city centre. Trondheim 3D city model is a digital representation of Trondheim municipality in the form of a larger 3D model based on information from map data (FKB-A/B), laser data and orthophoto from 2014 as well as slanted images from 2013 and street pictures from 2014 (some selected areas). The model is based on the following software versions: 3ds Max Design 2014, Forest Pro 4.3.6 and Unity 4.
The coordinate system is EUREF89 UTM Zone32 and the altitude system is NN2000.
The model consists of:
Terrain (based on laser and map data), Vegetation (based on laser), Building (a selection of these are textured from images, the rest from slants), other protruding objects from map data, 3D models including Olav Tryggvason’s statue, Bybroa and Tyholttårnet, municipal 3D model and high voltage grid.
The model is delivered to Trondheim Municipality in three forms:
Visualisation model, export model and VR model Here are some examples of current applications:
Still images, sketches/photorealism, seasonal variations, day/night, animations/movies, presentation tools, display different scenarios, sun/shadow ratio, visibility/visibility, images to reports.
We choose to publish the city model as a 3D Studio-Max project file (with all necessary associated files) and as a VR model.
UPDATE (16.02.2016):
After receiving some feedback on publishing the datasets, we are now posting these in several formats.
The reason we first chose to post the 3D city model only in proprietary format was that it was not established for publication purposes.
We're working on better ways to generate 3D models that are easier to share.
We post the following:
1.
Zip file containing 3ds Max project files (Trondheim_bymodell.zip) of Trondheim city model that are both dependent and independent of Forest pack and V-RAY.
The original model uses third-party plugins for trees and materials.
The new project files are partially or completely independent of these.
2.
Zip file containing Trondheim VR model (VR model Trondheim.zip).
3.
Zip file containing Trondheim VR model adapted for Mac (Trondheim.app.zip).
4.
Zip file containing terrain and buildings from the city model as 3ds files (Trondheim_3ds.zip).
Because of the way materials are foldered on the buildings of 3ds Max, image materials that accompany export files — such as 3ds files — will amount to very large amounts of data.
In this case, we've decided to just put out the geometry.
We also post the orthophoto files used in the original city model.
These can be used to texture/fit materials on terrain and roof.
On the download page, you can now see the size of the downloadable files.
