The seasonal land use is divided into five seasons, which in turn are divided into two categories by function and grazing intensity. Autumn winter pastures are areas that the reindeer spend on the autumn winter. Autumn winter pastures are again divided into two categories: Autumn winter grazing 1 — Intensively used areas, which are often packed with snow and become inaccessible to the reindeer throughout the winter. Autumn winter pasture 2 — Spredt used areas for the same period as Autumn winter grazing. Grazing will vary from year to year within the same area. The subdivision system applies to reindeer herding throughout the country. The annual variations in weather and grazing conditions mean that the seasonal boundaries must be somewhat wide and approximate.
