The GIS grid serves the coordinate transformation between the national Austrian system of national surveying MGI (also referred to as the utility system) and the European global reference system ETRS89. It is based on the NTv2 (National Transformation Version 2) grid-based transformation method developed and defined in Canada, whose format and method has now become a standard in the GIS field.
For Austria, it was developed between the geographical latitudes 46° 21′ and 49° 03′ and the geographical longitudes 9° 30′ and 17° 09′ 45′ in a regular grid of 30“x45” (equivalent to approximately 1 km x 1 km). Each grid element contains parameter values in the components East-West and North-South. The transformation of height is not defined in the GIS grid.
