This study presents the results of an 18-year monitoring programme for the resumption of grazing in Seewinkel/Burgenland. The main focus was on the effect of grazing with cattle and horses on the different plant societies of grassland in the Seewinkel/Neusiedler See National Park. These include the halophilic vegetation of the lacquer edges, the Pannonian dry and semi-dry grass, as well as the dry-embossed fallow areas of abandoned vineyards and fields. Over the entire monitoring period, grazing management was oriented towards the national park’s conservation objectives, especially the goal of preserving and restoring a small-scale, species-rich landscliaft mosaic.
