Nocturnal cold air Vienna

The theme map “Night Cold Air” shows the cold air height in meters, as well as the flow direction and effectiveness of the cold airways about 4 hours after sunset. This flow system occurs during a low-wind (low exchange) radiation weather situation in the summer. Provided are consistently good radiation conditions, i.e. low cloud cover throughout the night. In these weather conditions, there is only very little air exchange and thus also low cooling of the sealed, densely built city. Therefore, these nights cold air systems are particularly crucial for the well-being of the population. In addition, large-scale wind field changes are made visible in the map by high-rise clusters as well as the Donau airway. The latter favours the flow of the city through regional and large-scale wind systems and is also available in interchangeable weather conditions.
