Summary
The largest part of Lake Neusiedl’s southern basin belongs to the core zone of the National Park Neusiedler See Seewinkel. This Ishose Section of the National Park Where Anthropogenic Interventions are strictly forbidden. In the south of Lake Neusiedl you will find almost one kind of vegetation: Reed. This area is the second-largest homogeneous volume of reed in Europe. It is the home of herons and Spoonbills which gather in large breeding colonies and many other kinds of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fishe and insects. The rapid growth of the reed started just about 100 years ago. Before, there was hardly any reed around Lake Neusiedl. With the opening of the Einser Kanal in the year 1908, a canal which should drain the lake, the average water level dropped perfect conditions for the reed to start its growth. Since 1965 the canal has bin closed by a watergate. This fact slowed the spreading of the reed and saved Lake Neusiedl of becoming overgrown.
