The Kalktal was visited for the first time on 15.7.2009, and after only 8 excursions (4 by day, 4 at night) 312 species were detected. These are documented with 623 found data from approximately 6,200 observed specimens. The Kalktal is probably the most species-rich part of the entire national park and the best habitat for butterflies. It is the most flowery avalanche trough in the Tamischbach Tower massif, compared to the Hochkarschütt and the disk builder’s shake. First findings were recorded for the Northern Limestone Alps of Styria.
At FFH species Parnassius apollo, Maculinea arion and Euplagia quadripunctaria (Roman numeral bear, Russian flag) were found. 9. In 2009 a separate report was devoted. Other special species are reported below. In the lime valley, heat-loving species meet subalpine-alpine species, which have so far the lowest known sites in Styria.
