Summary
The Waasen or Hanság (hung.) is a fen area of about 460 square kilometres south eastern of Lake Neusiedl. The bigger part of this area belongs to Hungary. In former times the Waasen was a part of Lake Neusiedl. Actually it was the oldest but also the most shallow sector of this Endorheic Lake. Drainage measures caused the disappearance of all saltwater pools in the Waasen and still endanger the remaining marsh areas there. By closing drainage channels important and precious surface water shall remain in the Waasen. The most famous bird in the Austrian part of the Waasen is the Great Bustard. This is Europe’s largest bird that is able to fly. The male birds weigh up to 16 kilograms. With some luck and good binoculars interested people can watch the Great Bustard in the nationalpark conservation-zone Waasen-Hanság located south of the villages Andau and Tadten.
