The study investigates the accessibility of 13 Alpine regions in Austria by public transport. The main focus is on getting there by train. In addition to the duration of the journey, the frequency of transfers and the railway service, public transport in the tourist destinations was analysed. Travel costs were collected on a random basis by different means of transport and compared with each other. Currently, less than 10 % of tourists travel by train. The study identifies the causes of this and makes recommendations on how to increase this proportion. This requires intensive cooperation between tourism and transport management at regional, national and international levels. The study is part of a cross-border study of travel behaviour in the Alpine region within the framework of the Alpine Convention.
