Dataset description

Animal by-products are produced as farm fertilisers during slaughter, meat and milk processing, in the food trade, in restaurants and kitchens and in agriculture. The aim of the study was to present the quantities and treatment routes of animal by-products in Austria between 2004 and 2006. Excluding farm manure, slaughter waste with around 260,000 tonnes is the most important animal by-products by volume, followed by waste from meat and milk processing with just over 100,000 tonnes each. In the survey period, the collected kitchen and food waste and the import of animal by-products increased. Around half of animal by-products (excluding farm manure) are processed into animal meal and animal fat in rendering plants, and another 15-20 % are used in biogas plants.
