These effects range from (temporary) impairments of lung function to attributable deaths, mainly due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. According to a recent assessment by the World Health Organisation (WHO), outdoor air pollution is one of the environmental influences that cause the greatest health impacts in Western industrialised countries.
