The care zones serve on the one hand to protect and preserve species-rich cultural landscapes in the Biosphere Park, as well as as buffer zones around core zones in order to buffer influences on the “urban forests of tomorrow”. In the BPWW, the nursing zones are mainly openland habitats, i.e. those landscapes that are created by grubbing-up and kept open by agricultural use.
For more details, see https://www.bpww.at/de/artikel/pflegezonen
In nursing zones only the types of grassland use of agriculture and forestry, agricultural and forestry farm site, green belt, preserved buildings in grassland, cemetery, park, wasteland/eco area, water area and open spaces are allowed. Building land may only be dedicated under certain circumstances defined in the Lower Austria LGBl.
The care zones cover around 29.000 ha of the Lower Austria share of the BPWW (total area of the BPWW in Lower Austria: 95.100 ha).
