In the 2011 Climate Protection Report, the Federal Environment Agency analyses the trend of greenhouse gas emissions in Austria from 1990-2009 and compares this with the objectives of the Austrian climate strategy. In 2009, the second year of the Kyoto commitment period, greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 80.1 million tonnes. The use of flexible mechanisms, taking into account emissions trading and effects from new forest management and deforestation, results in a mathematical deviation of about 5.0 million tonnes for 2009. An estimate for the whole period 2008-2012 suggests a gap of around 30 million tonnes. In order to fulfil the commitment of the Kyoto Protocol and to meet the 2020 targets, further domestic reduction measures and additional use of flexible instruments are needed in particular.
