In 2016, around 79.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. Emissions were thus around 1.2 % higher than in 1990. Compared to the previous year, GHG emissions increased by 1.0 %. The main responsibility is the increase in emissions in the transport and buildings sectors. The non-European emissions trading sectors emitted 50.6 million tonnes in 2016. GHG emissions were thus 0.4 million tonnes below the national emission ceiling for 2016. According to scenario analyses by the Federal Environment Agency, the national GHG reduction target by 2020 can be achieved through additional measures, especially in transport and indoor heating. Consistent long-term efforts are essential for achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets.
