In 2018, approximately 79.0 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. Emissions were thus around 0.6 % higher than in 1990. Compared to the previous year 2017, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 3.7 %. The main reason for the decline was the decommissioning of a large blast furnace due to maintenance and the lower generation of electricity from natural gas. The non-European emissions trading sectors emitted 50.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2018. As a result, these greenhouse gas emissions were 1.6 million tonnes above the national emission ceiling for 2018. However, compliance with the national target for 2020 is likely to be achieved because of the availability of unused emission allowances from previous years. Consistent emission reduction in all sectors is essential for the 2030 and 2050 climate targets.
