In 2019, around 79.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. Emissions were thus around 1.8 % higher than in 1990. Compared to 2018, greenhouse gas emissions increased by 1.5 %. This was mainly due to higher steel production, higher electricity production in natural gas power plants and higher use of fossil fuels in the building sector due to weather conditions.
The non-European emissions trading sectors emitted 50.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2019, up 1.9 million tonnes above the 2019 emission ceiling.
Nevertheless, compliance with the national target for 2020 is likely, given that unconsumed emission allowances are available from previous years and a significant reduction in emissions is expected in 2020 due to the pandemic.
