In 2017, approximately 82.3 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. Emissions were thus around 4.6 % higher than in 1990. Compared to the previous year 2016, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased by 3.3 %. The main reason for this is the increase in emissions in the transport sector, as well as in the energy and industry sectors. The non-European emissions trading sectors emitted 51.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2017. GHG emissions thus exceeded the national emission ceiling for 2017 by 2.1 million tonnes for the first time. However, compliance with the national GHG reduction trajectory 2013 to 2020 is plausible as emission allowances not yet consumed from previous years are available. Consistent long-term efforts are essential for achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets.
