In accordance with the Fuel Quality Directive, compliance with environmental quality standards for fuels is reviewed and reported annually as part of the Fuel Quality Monitoring System. Since 2003, the Federal Environment Agency has carried out these quality controls in Austria. In 2011, around 7.8 million tonnes of fuel were sold in Austria, about 6 million tonnes of which were diesel fuels. In order to check the quality of the fuels, a total of 303 samples were taken at 303 petrol stations throughout Germany. Diesel fuel has been tested for compliance with ON EN 590, petrol for ON EN 228 compliance. A total of 14 deviations from the established standard parameters were found (6 exceedances for the maximum vapour pressure parameter, 2 at maximum sulphur content and density, and 4 at boiling stage).
