The study focuses on how environmental and nature conservation aspects can be taken into account in the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The main focus here is the spatial conflict potential between GMO cultivation and nature conservation. Two case studies show the effects of potential GMO cultivation in and around areas protected by nature conservation law. The first deals with the cultivation of insect-resistant maize in the south-east Styrian hill country, the second the cultivation of herbicide-tolerant rapeseed near Lake Neusiedl. In both cases, risk scenarios are presented and implementation strategies are developed. Based on this, recommendations are made for the use case and identify the data bases necessary to assess potential risks (e.g. for protected species).
