Linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) are wash active substances contained in detergents, rinsing agents, detergents and shampoos. They are most common in the aquatic environment of all abiotic substances. In Austria, surface waters have been subject to an environmental quality standard (Chemical Surface Water Quality Target Ordinance) since 2006. In 1994 the levels of LAS in smaller rivers often exceeded this environmental quality standard of 270 μg/L, only a maximum of 23 μg/L was detected in the 2010 analysis. Since 1994, several regulations have been adopted at European level concerning detergents. The reasons for the decrease in LAS concentrations are the consistent compliance with environmental standards for washing, rinsing, detergents and softeners as well as investments in connection to sewage treatment plants.
