The near-term forecast of greenhouse gas emissions was carried out using a simplified methodology and shows provisional emissions for 2021 amounting to approximately 77.1 million tonnes. Compared to 2020, this represents an increase of 4.8 % and 3.5 million CO2 equivalent respectively. Reported emissions from emissions trading installations showed an increase of 6.2 % in 2021, with 28.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This is due in particular to increases in steel production and electricity generation in gas-fired power plants. Some 46.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in the economic sectors not subject to the European Emissions Trading Scheme in 2021. The increase in emissions of around 4.0 % compared to 2020 is mainly due to the increase in fuel consumption (+ 4.1 %), fuel oil (+ 9.0) and natural gas (+ 4.8 %).
