According to preliminary figures, some 73.7 million tonnes of greenhouse gases were emitted in Austria in 2020. Compared to 2019, this represents a decrease of 7.7 % and 6.2 million CO2 equivalent respectively.
In particular, the global coronavirus pandemic has led to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of around 14 % in the transport sector. Emissions trading declined in steel production and in electricity production from natural gas and coal. Emissions from the rest of the sectors remained close to similar levels.
Overall, the preliminary figures for the non-European emissions trading sectors show emissions of around 46.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2020. This will reduce the ceiling for 2020 by 1.2 million tonnes and also ensure the achievement of targets over the whole period 2013-2020.
