In line with the objectives of the Water Framework Directive, good status for groundwater needs to be achieved by 2015, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The average residence time (MVZ) of groundwater can be used as an indicator of the effectiveness of measures against groundwater pollution. The aim of the pilot project is to provide a statistically area-based overview of the MVZ in the top-level groundwater stock plant. For this purpose, up to four different methods of MVZ determination were used at measuring points in Marchfeld, on the Parndorf plate, on Traun Enns plate and at four sources in Styria. The results show that the MVZ is usually longer than 10 to 15 years. Current measures to reduce groundwater pollution can therefore only be measured in these groundwater bodies after 2015.
