Since 1846, the management of the forests has supported in Belgium on data collected through 10-yearly accounts. The latter were carried out through direct consultation of forest owners through questionnaires. In order to optimise the storage and processing of data for the management of the forest heritage, a digital forest mapping was drawn up by Eurosense Technologies nv during the period 1978-1992 on the basis of the interpretation of colour-infrared orthophotos (fly scale 1:5000) commissioned by the Forest and Green Department, AMINAL, LIN, Ministry of the Flemish Community. This forest mapping was transformed in 1994 by the Flemish Land Company into an integrated database containing both a geographical (the forest polygons with their respectable georeference) and a descriptive (the characteristics such as owner class, tree species, municipality, woodforest, etc.) in 1994.
