This dataset aims to be a follow-up to the first demarcation of the ecodistricts, which was drawn up by the Institute for Nature Conservation and included in the Flanders Structure Plan, part-facet Open Space (1993). For drawing up a concept for a refined ecological classification in Flanders, the theoretically elaborate example of the Netherlands was used. The theory provides an accurate description of the ecological hierarchical levels. Moreover, the context of Dutch ecology is quite conceivable as an example for a Flemish classification. An unambiguous definition for ecodistricts was assumed, which was later adapted to the Flemish context (the ecological situation on the one hand and the availability of land-covered information on the other).
