The collective name polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs includes hundreds of chemically related, persistent organic pollutants, ranging in structure and harmfulness.
PAHs are released from incomplete combustion, such as wood burning in stoves and fireplaces, fossil fuel combustion (e.g. traffic and building heating), steel and coke production, in cigarette smoke, through waste incineration (e.g. fires in gardens).
