(Non-methane) volatile organic compounds ((NM)VOC) are gaseous substances composed mainly of carbon and hydrogen atoms. They are often bad for health and/or the environment. Some VOCs (e.g. benzene) are carcinogenic, others threaten the ozone layer.
Sulphur dioxide (SO2) may result from the combustion of fossil fuels containing sulphur. This gas contributes to acidification of soil and water. Acidification is detrimental to the environment and affects buildings.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by incomplete combustion. High concentrations are found mainly in poorly vented rooms with old heating systems. Exposure to CO could lead to death.
Dioxins and PCBs (polychlorobiphenyls) are produced by incomplete combustion of organic material containing chlorine. We'll find them in scrap, too. If these substances end up in our water and food by air, they can accumulate in our fat tissue and harm health.
