STRAATOBJECTEN_HEKWERK_ALGEEN City development/Management_and_Operations Constructions are placed in urban areas for the sake of safety. With this one object, a solution is provided for the delimitation, separation and articulation of the public space. The most well-known applications being fences along bridges and ascending structures, around docks and quays and along ponds and canals.
Antwerp has no tradition in placing fences, unlike Mechelen or Lier, where the water runs through the city and for safety reasons balustrades were placed as a border. In Antwerp, the only denotable fence along the quays, where city and port area were separated by a fence in the 19th century; only the hiking terraces allowed a look at the harbour event.
For a number of years, the fencing has reappeared as street furniture. Usually, the reason is the protection of the weak road user against the fast and aggressive motorised traffic. In recent years you will also find them more and more along tramways — after all, a railway vehicle has priority anytime and everywhere. Moreover, it is increasingly proposed as an alternative to the many ranges of (traffic) poles in the city — with or without the possibility of greening through climbing plants or hedge structures.
De Lijn and the Green Service are today the largest siters of fencing and closures in the city. The Flemish Transport Company places them on platforms along central tram and bus lanes and as protection/separation from the non-transferable beds. Urban and neighbourhood maintenance uses fencing on the green and playground areas as, bordering ponds and borders, as a structure for hedges and climbing plants, to overcome balls on sports and playgrounds,... In addition, Chainposts were often placed on school environments in the past, in order to prevent children from (impulsively) crossing the street when leaving the school gate. Finally, there is a removable/foldable closure that is used in squares to give markets, commuters or other festivities, exceptionally, access to the square.
