Based on the results of intensive soil mapping during the 1950s to 1970s, the Belgian soil map was drawn up. This Belgian soil map is based on the Belgian soil classification system. It is a national system designed exclusively for Belgian soils. For the Flemish Region, this soil map was therefore converted to WRB-2014, the 3 rd edition of the international soil classification system World Reference Base. The field ‘Soil Unit’ gives the standard bottom name according to WRB. By using ‘Reference Soil Groups’ (coloured surfaces) and ‘Principal Qualifiers’ (brown lined polygons with labels), the most important information from the bottom map of Belgium can be translated into the WRB system. Information on texture, drainage, soil morphology and chemical soil fertility is held back in 4 groups of Supplementary Qualifiers. The field “Belgian soil type” is taken from the original soil map. The translation was done per soil district indicated in the field “Belgian_bottom district”.
