In order to reduce accidents, Infrabel aims to eliminate as many level crossings as possible and replace them with safer alternatives. Here is the number of level crossings that have been removed since 2010.
A level crossing is the crossing between an public or private way and one or more railway track.
There are two types of level crossings
Public level crossing: The total or partial crossing of the level of a public road by one or more railway tracks established outside the roadway.
Private level crossing: The total or partial crossing on the same level of a public or private road by one or more railway tracks established outside the roadway, and which was created in the interest of private individuals.
Through the TEN-T programme (Trans-European Transport Network) and the CEF programme (Connecting Europe Facilities), we have already received financial support from the European Union to remove a number of level crossings.
