For the assessment of biological water quality, the MMIF (Multimetric Macro Invertebrate Index Flanders) is used. Macro-invertebrates are larger, unobservable invertebrates, such as insects (larvae), molluscs, crustaceans, worms, etc. The MMIF takes into account, among other things, the total number of taxa found, its diversity and its susceptibility to pollution. The award of the quality class depends on the type of water body. In order to facilitate the interpretation of the figures, the class ‘good and higher’ is added to the class ‘good’.
