A synthetic indicator of premature mortality that provides an explicit way to estimate early deaths. To calculate the potential years of life lost (PAVP), the number of deaths is added to the different ages and multiplied by the number of years remaining to live up to a given age limit (70 years here). The results are standardised, the reference population is the European population 2013. Infant deaths (first year of life) are excluded from the PAVP calculation because they are due to specific causes and often have a different etiology than deaths at a later age This indicator is presented as an overall figure. It is expressed in lost years per 100,000 inhabitants aged 1 to 69.
