On this map, the degree of exceedance of the critical deposition value (KDW) for eutrophication of the European habitats to be protected in Flanders is shown in the shades of yellow-orange red. The green areas are the habitats where the WFD is (currently) not in excess. The grey areas are those habitats that are not sensitive to the effect of aerial eutrophication (> 34 kg N/ha.year). The KDW is the amount of nitrogen deposition (kilogram nitrogen per hectare per year) for a given ecosystem under which, according to current scientific knowledge, there is no significant change in biodiversity in the long term. A specific WFD is defined for each habitat type. Not every type of nature is equally sensitive to eutrophication. The overshooting card was drawn up by the VITO on the basis of the following data: (A) The modelled depositions of eutrophications based on VLOPS20, the version of the VLOPS model in 2020 using emission and meteorological data from the year 2017. This is a grid layer with resolution of 1 km²; (B) The BWK habitat map version 2020; and (C) The appropriate expansion sites for European protected habitats and species: the so-called provisional search areas for conservation objectives — version 0.2 (ANB, 2015).
