Population prospects

At regular intervals, population prospects are drawn up to give the various players in the social, economic and political field of our country the opportunity to learn about the possible evolution of the population and its components. These prospects are based on a comprehensive knowledge of the current demographic situation and on assumptions about the components of the course of the population: mortality, fertility, internal migration and international migration. The latest available population prospects are those of 2019-2070. They are the result of close cooperation between the Federal Planning Bureau (FPB) and Statbel. They were published in 2020 and followed the outlook 2018-2070. They are based on the observations on 1 January 2019 and were elaborated by arrondissement, age, gender and two groups of nationalities. They are complemented by household projections and by calculating prospective mortality ratios. Population Inhabitants in Belgium Frequency Three-yearly. Nationality: The results of the outlook have been broken down into persons of Belgian nationality and persons of foreign nationality (on 1 January of that year). Administrative entity: The results of the forecasts shall be drawn up by region, province and arrondissement. Natural balance: difference between the number of births and the number of deaths. Migration balance: difference between the number of immigrations and the number of emigrations.
