Dataset description
This map gives an indication for every 10 m cell within the Flemish Region whether or not it belongs to the space seizure, and this for condition year 2019. The concept of “space fitting” is defined in the White Paper on Space Policy Plan as that part of the space in which the biophysical function is no longer the most important. In other words, it is about the space occupied by our settlements (i.e. for housing, industrial and commercial purposes, transport infrastructure, recreational purposes and also parks and gardens). This definition is based on the definition used by the European Commission for ‘settlement area’ or ‘artificial land’, namely ‘the area of land used for housing, industrial and commercial purposes, health care, education, nursing infrastructure, roads and rail networks, recreation (parks and sports grounds), etc. In land use planning, it usually corresponds to all land uses beyond agriculture, semi-natural areas, forestry, and water bodies’ (EC, 2012). The space loot, as compiled here, is based on the 4 levels of the ‘land use stock 2019’. In particular, space occupancy is defined by a combination of a number of land use categories at the different levels. For more details on the creation of the underlying ‘land use file’ and on the method of allocation to space seizure, please refer to the technical report ‘Land use and space seizure in Flanders, condition 2019’, which can be found at https://archief-algemeen.omgeving.vlaanderen.be/xmlui/handle/acd/449392
