The term ‘statistical sector’ was introduced in 1970 by the National Statistical Institute (NIS). Previously, the municipality was the smallest administrative entity for which socio-economic data were available. The statistical sectors divide the territory of Belgium on the basis of morphological and/or socio-economic characteristics. The delimitation of statistical sectors usually coincides with elements that can be recognised in the field or administrative/administrative classifications. Many detailed inventories are generalised to provide information at the level of the statistical sector. This data product contains the vector data of the statistical sectors on 01/01/2011, generalised version, of the General Directorate of Statistics — statistiscs Belgium.
