The layout of the traditional landscapes of Flanders dates back to 1985 and was a first attempt to map the regional diversity of the historically grown cultural landscapes in their situation prior to the major changes. The classification is based on both physical and natural features such as relief and soil conditions, as well as cultural features such as habitation, land use, perceleration and landscape type. This shows that the Flemish Region has a particularly large landscape diversity, which, however, is declining at an ever faster pace.
