The Combined Nomenclature is the classification of goods used within the EU for the purposes of commodity exchange statistics. It is also used by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union for customs purposes. The classification is maintained by Eurostat for statistical purposes and by the Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union for tariff purposes and is binding on the Member States as a Council Regulation.
Classification is based on the Harmonised System (HS). The CN was introduced in 1998 together with the HS.
