Aquaculture facilities — point of discharge

Aquaculture facilities are fish farms, marine farms and saltwater-based installations where fish are produced. The type of aquaculture registered here has discharges to the aquatic environment. The recorded point of discharge is the point where the discharge takes place. The measurement point is the point at which measurements are taken. Fish farms are usually freshwater farms that produce fish in ponds. Marine farms are net cages located in coastal areas in saltwater. Saltwater farms use salt water, but may have ponds on land and thus a production similar to the fish farms. Information on emissions from aquaculture is regularly reported to the European Environment Agency and the Baltic Sea Cooperation, HELCOM.
