In December 2004, the Directorate General Press and Communications wanted to further analyse certain trends that usually come up in Standard Eurobarometer surveys. For this purpose a Special Eurobarometer was included in the Eurobarometer 62.2 series carried out between 22 November and 19 December 2004. The particular backdrop to this survey is the arrival of a new European Commission as well as the period just after the American elections. These two major events at the end of 2004
enjoyed considerable media coverage in all the Member States of the European Union.
This report consecutively addresses the following issues:
♦ Support for membership of the European Union
♦ Trust in three specific institutions (the Parliament, the Commission and the Council)
♦ Support for the European Constitution
♦ Perception of the way democracy works within the European Union
♦ The role played by the European Union by comparison with that played by the United States in certain fields.
