The dataset contains information related to commercial designations of fishery and aquaculture products (information related to the name of the fish you find on a label) marketed in the European Union. The site compares all the lists of commercial designations drawn up by the EU Member States.
Each EU Member State is [required to publish](http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/en/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32013R1379) a list of the commercial designations accepted in its territory. The list indicates the scientific name for each species, its name in the official language or languages of the Member State and, where applicable, any other name or names accepted or permitted locally or regionally. The national lists are compiled independently of one another and consequently difficult to compare.
Therefore, the European Commission has set up this single multilingual tool that pools and shares all existing information related to fishery and aquaculture products marketed in the EU. It ensures transparency for European consumers and, more generally, all EU and non-EU stakeholders (producers, fishmongers, processors, importers, retailers, customs and sanitary services) as regards one of the key elements of the labelling of fishery and aquaculture products.
