Activation reason:
The scope of the current activation is the support of Regional Civil Protection of Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy) with geospatial analysis regarding the extent of the recent avalanches and their associated impacts, as well as a pre-event avalanche hazard and exposure of assets and population over the remote locality of Sauris in the province of Udine. Between December 2020 and January 2021 intense snowfalls affected Region Friuli Venezia Giulia. In that period several warnings for avalanche risks were issued in the area. In particular, on 6 January 2021 in the municipality of Sauris, the wet snow caused the detachment of several avalanches with interruption of the road network between mountain towns and possible damages to the electrical infrastructures. As requested by the User, a set of five pre/post-event products was produced over a single area of interest centered on the locality of Sauris.Proposed solution and resultsA reference dataset, including Land Use Land Cover, produced by mean of visual interpretation (Product 1).An avalanche delineation based on the helicopter footage performed right after the event (Product 2).A damage assessment (Product 3) based on the intersection between Products 1 and 2, due to the lack of relevant post-event data.A Pre-event avalanche hazard analysis (Product 4), obtained by a multi-criteria evaluation approach, using natural (topography, snow volume) and Land Cover factors.A pre-event avalanche exposure on assets and population, which corresponds to the spatial juxtaposition of avalanche hazard (Product 5) with the location of Highly Valued Resources and Assets.Reference layers produced over Sauris (Product 1)LULC layers produced over Sauris (Product 1)Avalanche areas delineated as light stripe polygons (Product 2)Pre-event avalanche hazard map (Product 4)
