This data set contains for the whole of Europe a set of layers on soil moisture estimates based on a) satellite information and b) hydrological model outcome. Additionally, it comes with a layer on soil moisture anomalies.
Brief informaiton on the individual layers:
1) Satellite-derived soil moisture: Relative soil moisture for soil depths 0 - 1.0m as derived from the advanced scatterometer (ASCAT) on board the METOP satellite. Relative soil moisture is calculated using a weighted average of the three different soil moisture layers provided by ASCAT. This is an operational H-SAF product. For more information visit http://hsaf.meteoam.it/soil-moisture.php
2) Model-derived soil moisture: LISFLOOD simulated relative soil moisture of the upper soil layer based on observed meteorological input.
3) Soil moisture anomalies: Deviation of the LISFLOOD simulated daily soil moisture from normal conditions. The normal conditions have been derived using the simulated soil moisture from a 22 year model climatology (1991 - 2012). This information is part of the operational suit of EFAS (www.efas.eu) and intends to provide EFAS partners with in-depth information about the current soil moisture (anomaly) as important supplementary information to better judge upcoming hydrological extremes.
The update frequency of this data set is daily; and the spatial coverage is the extended geographic Europe.
