The eruptive activity has been characterized mainly by explosions as well as emissions of lava from several eruptive fissures starting from the base of the New South East Crater. On 26th of December at 2:19 am UTC, an earthquake of 4.8 magnitude hit the same part of the region. The epicentre is located between Viagrande and Trecastagni, two small villages close to Catania. According to the National Institute of Volcanology (INGV) the earthquake was very shallow, only 1 km deep and for this reason it has produced many damages to houses and infrastructures.
