Respiratory diseases are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Research on human diseases relies extensively on animal models, however, effective new therapies for serious respiratory conditions are still lacking.
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has carried out an extensive review of advanced non-animal models being used for basic and applied research into respiratory tract diseases. Researchers characterised and catalogued 284 models to make them more accessible for human relevant studies that avoid the use of animals.
The review has been compiled by EcoMole Ltd, Humane Society UK, and Prof Ian Adcock (Imperial College London UK) for EURL ECVAM (Joint Research Centre, Directorate for Health, Consumers and Reference Materials, Chemicals Safety and Alternative Methods Unit; contract number: JRC/IPR/2017/F.3/0050/O)
