Activation date: 2022-02-03
Event type: Humanitarian

Activation reason:
The activation aims to support Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e. V. within the context of hazard identification and management activities by providing detailed information on infrastructure (buildings and road network) and agricultural activity (field delineation, crop mapping, and productivity), in order to better identify potential risks that may endanger food security, and mitigation measures that enable better resilience in the fragile environment of the AOIs. The AOIs are located in the Badakhshan province in the north-eastern of Afghanistan and bordering with Tajikistan, on both sides of the Panj River. The region is situated at an altitude of 2,500 - 3,000 m is characterised by steep terrain, dry summers and wet winters. Precipitation effects such as mudslides threaten settlements and agricultural fields hence negatively impacting the prosperity of local population. The following products were generated:Mapping of buildings, houses, infrastructures based on VHR optical satellite images to provide an up-to-date situational picture.Generation of a mapbook containing 41 detail maps in a scale of 1:10,000 showing the up-to-date situational picture of buildings and infrastructure elements.Mapping and semi-automatic delineation of agricultural plots based on VHR data and machine learning based classification/ differentiation of the crop types Potato, Wheat and Other using a S2 timeline analysis over the vegetation period of 2021. In order to reflect the situation of the agricultural season 2022, an update was conducted.Computation of land productivity using a S2 timeline analysis over the vegetation period of 2021.
