This dataset contains information on the European groundwater body horizons delineated for the 2nd River Basin Management Plans (RBMP) under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The information was reported to the European Commission under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) reporting obligations. The dataset compiles the available spatial data related to the 2nd RBMPs due in 2016 (hereafter WFD2016). See http://rod.eionet.europa.eu/obligations/715 for further information on the WFD2016 reporting.
According to the WFD reporting guidance, the spatial delineation of each groundwater body horizon must be reported if, and only if, a groundwater body has different horizons. Please refer to Annex 4 in the WFD Reporting Guidance for further information on the spatial delineation of groundwater horizons. The horizon element identifies each of the horizons of a groundwater body, using a simple integer numeration (in the sense of the numerical position of the groundwater body starting with the first horizon from the surface). If the groundwater body belong to a single horizon, then the information in this dataset and corresponding service matches that of the WFD2016_GroundWaterBody_WM service.
The groundwater body spatial dataset can be downloaded via the EEA SDI: https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/333bafc0-d0d5-4d8a-8153-7ca602311014. The information about quantitative status, chemical status, etc. can be downloaded via the EEA web site: https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/wise-wfd-4
NOTE: This metadata refers to the public dataset. Some reported datasets from the United Kingdom cannot be redistributed and are included in the internal version of this dataset (see WISE WFD groundwater body horizons reported under Water Framework Directive 2016 - INTERNAL VERSION - version 1.0, Jun. 2021). However, the web service does include UK dataset only for visualisation purposes.
Relevant concepts:
Groundwater body: 'Body of groundwater' means a distinct volume of groundwater within an aquifer or aquifers.
Groundwater: All water which is below the surface of the ground in the saturation zone and in direct contact with the ground or subsoil.
Aquifer: Subsurface layer or layers of rock or other geological strata of sufficient porosity and permeability to allow either a significant flow of groundwater or the abstraction of significant quantities of groundwater.
