A RAMSAR site is an area designated under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, particularly as Waterbird Habitats, whose treaty was signed in 1971 on the shores of the Caspian Sea (Iran). Its entry into force dates from 1975, the ratification by France in 1986. Listing on the global list of RAMSAR sites assumes that the site meets one or more criteria demonstrating its international significance.
The MNHN is responsible for verifying the relevance of the scientific sections of the fact sheets drawn up for the new French candidate sites. The Bureau of the Convention encourages the designation of transboundary wetlands.
