This dataset contains the perimeter polygon of the active eel area on the Adour watershed.
In response to the worrying decline of the European eel population, the European Commission issued a regulation in September 2007 which introduces measures for the recovery of the eel stock and required each Member State to submit a management plan to safeguard the species by 31 December 2008.
In order to respond to the European Regulation, France submitted on 17 December 2008 its first national eel management plan (PGA), which corresponds to a first three-year management cycle (2009-2011).
The European Commission approved the French eel management plan by decision of 15 February 2010.
The objectives of the 2009-2011 AMP are to:
— initiate the reduction of the various factors of eel mortality;
— enable the acquisition of data necessary to achieve the objectives of the Regulation;
— facilitate the evaluation of the plan in 2012;
— prepare the next plan 2012-2015.
Among the areas hosting different stages of eel maturity (biological criteria), depending on the importance of colonisation of the area, the following are distinguished:
— the colonizable areas where the eel has been identified;
— colonised areas characterised by eel populations of varying sizes and ages;
— active areas hosting individuals less than 30 cm renewing the stock in place. The upstream boundary of this area reached by these young individuals is called the colonisation front.
