Any voluntary operation that destroys the wooded state of a land and puts an end to its forest destination is a clearing.
Any voluntary transaction with the same consequences, indirectly and ultimately, shall also be cleared, unless it is undertaken under an easement in the public interest.
Accidental or deliberate destruction of afforestation shall not remove the forest destination of the land, which shall remain subject to the provisions of this Title." (Article L341-1 of the Forestry Code)
